Jacob's Animated Initial
Jacob is a Grade 7 student in California. We connected online again and began exploring how to create animations using Python and Manim. I suggested that we try making something simple together.
Instead of choosing a tutorial-style project, Jacob immediately said: āJ.ā It was the first letter of his name. That small choice shifted the entire direction of the sessionāfrom following instructions to creating something personally meaningful.
A bright yellow āJā appeared on the screen, with a small red dot moving along it like a playful character. The dot raced across the top stroke and then smoothly followed the curve downward. Every motion came from Jacobās own code. He was no longer just writing instructionsāhe was designing motion, timing, and expression.
When children are given ownership of what they create, even the simplest idea can become deeply engaging. Programming becomes less about syntax and more about expressing imagination through structured motion and design.
